NOMINATION PAPERS SNATCHED, TORN

Patiala/Bathinda: Some panchayat poll candidates have accused their rivals, allegedly backed by the government, of snatching and tearing their nomination papers amid the chaos surrounding the submission process. Friday was the last day for filing nominations for the post of sarpanch and panch.

Sukhwinder Kaur, a Democratic MGNREGA Front leader and an SC nominee, who will contest from the general seat of Nohar village in Patiala district, alleged that a rival group entered the nomination centre, snatched her nomination papers from the returning officer (RO), and fled.

"The 3 pm deadline was nearing and I had just handed over my files to the officials at Nabha government school. To my shock and disbelief, some people snatched the papers from the RO and fled. These anti-democratic officials are hand-in-glove with AAP-backed candidates. Police present there did not even react to the incident," Sukhwinder said.

Sukhwinder was summoned by police in August, a day after she had approached the SDM Nabha and sought a report against the BDPO for failure to address issues raised protesting MGNREGA workers. SDM Patiala Ismit Vijay Singh said, "I received a telephonic complaint from the affected nominee, but no written complaint has been submitted so far. A fair probe will be conducted once I get a formal complaint.

" In a similar incident, Jaswinder Kaur of Noor Kheri village in Patiala alleged that her group was shocked by a rival that snatched and tore her nomination papers at the BDPO office, and police remained mute spectators. Villagers claimed that even strong AAP supporters could not reach an agreement and they were now contesting the elections against each other.

Firing, ruckus in Moga On the last day of filing of nomination papers for the panchayat elections on Friday, allegations of firing and police high-handedness rocked Moga district’s Dharamkot area.

A few people keen to contest elections alleged that persons associated with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not allow them to file their nomination papers by tearing off their documents. ‘Police high-handedness’

Residents from nearby villages said they had assembled well before time to file their nomination papers but were debarred from exercising their democratic right. They also accused the police of supporting the "hooligans" and using force against them.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema posted video clips of applicants on X (formerly Twitter) showing them complaining of intimidation by persons associated with the ruling party. Mohan Singh of Chotian village alleged that one applicant reached the block development panchayat officer’s office and fired in the air. Nirlep Singh, a senior Akali leader, too leveled similar allegations. Police denied any such incidents took place.

Moga senior superintendent of police Ajay Gandhi said that sufficient police force has been deployed in the area, assuring to look into the complaints.
