MALDIVES IMPOSES HEFTY FINE ON
TN FISHING BOAT

A Maldivian court has imposed a fine of Rs 2.27
crore (42 lakh Rufiyaa) for the release of the Thoothukudi-based deep sea tuna
liner, detained along
with 12 fishermen for entering the territorial waters of Maldives.
Twelve fishermen from Tharuvaikulam coastal
village in Thoothukudi district, arrested along with their boat on October 24
while returning after fishing by the Maldivian Coast Guard on charge of illegal entry into the territorial waters of
Maldives.
However, on the official intervention of the
Indian embassy in Maldives, all the arrested fishermen were permitted to go
free. The Maldivian court, according to sources from the department of
fisheries, imposed a fine of 42 lakh Rufiyaa that values around 2,27,64,000 in
Indian rupee for the release of the boat.
As the fine is very hefty and could not be paid
by the fishermen, the 12 men though allowed to go out remained in Maldives.
The boat owner, Michael Packiyaraj went to
Maldives along with some fishermen association leaders from Thoothukudi a
couple of days ago on the instruction of the Indian embassy in Maldives, has
reportedly made an appeal to the Indian government to talk with the Maldivian
administration to waive the fine for the safe return of the boat which is his sole livelihood.

The bought owner has sought the help of the government of India to get the fine waived.
