COASTAL RD POTHOLE REPAIRS ANGER MOTORISTS

Mumbai: Citizens have voiced concerns over the state of repairs on the north-bound stretch of the coastal road near Haji Ali junction. Social media platforms have been
flooded with criticism, with many questioning the quality
of work carried out by BMC. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted
that poor infrastructure could become a major liability in the future, while
others called for better accountability of taxpayers'
money.
Expressing frustration, activist Zoru Bhathena said, "Even if there is a
problem, the BMC should fix it in a proper way. Besides, the ride from
Chowpatty to Worli is bumpy. Bandra-Worli Sea Link is not bumpy, and even the
airport elevated road is not bumpy. A project of such exorbitant costs as coastal road having a bad surface is
terrible, but the way they have repaired the road is worse. It is a reflection
of the way the project is being carried out."
Citizens point out that repair work on the north-bound
corridor has left visible patches and uneven
surfaces, causing inconvenience to commuters.
But BMC sources explained that mastic asphalting was done on certain patches as
a precaution to prevent potholes after wetness was noticed on
the road.
BMC sources clarified that asphalt is usually laid during
the non-monsoon months, allowing for proper healing under traffic conditions.
In this case, the north-bound stretch was resurfaced just before the monsoon, leaving it exposed to rain
before it could settle properly. As a preventive measure, an additional
protective layer was applied to withstand the rains, but post-monsoon milling
of these patches will be conducted to ensure an even surface.
In a related development, one arm of the coastal road arch bridge, connected to the sea link, is expected to open this month. The south-bound carriageway will initially handle north-bound traffic from Marine Drive towards Bandra.
