CIVIC APATHY PLAGUES SANJAY PARK AREA

Citizens bear the brunt of inadequate infrastructure development, poor upkeep of public amenities

The Sanjay Park neighbourhood in Viman Nagar is marred by a slew of civic issues, with infrastructure projects remaining only on paper, and even after three decades, the region is mired in a tangle of problems due to civic negligence.

Some issues citizens encounter are lack of footpaths, proper roads and drainage systems. Despite numerous complaints to the civic authority, nothing has been done to resolve the problems. This area comes under Nagar Road – Vadgaon Sheri ward office.

“Even after 30 years, if the plan for the development of the Sanjay Park area remains on paper, action should be taken against the officials concerned,” demanded Swapnil Mane, youth president, Samarthya Jan Shakti Sangha.

A park has been established in the area for seniors and children. However, no footpaths have been created or trees have been planted on the park’s premises. As a result, the residents of this neighbourhood are experiencing problems in the park area. There is no security guard present. Hence, the question of the safety of the citizens coming here has come to the fore. As there is no play material in the park, children are denied the opportunity to play in the park 

Another issue is parking. Since the PMC garden department has not constructed a parking lot in the park premises, the local citizens are parking their vehicles inside the park. Additionally, there is no park officer or staff coming in the area, motorists misuse the space and park their vehicles in the park.

Incessant rains for the past few days have exposed the poor drainage work by the civic body. Despite a drainage line laid by spending lakhs of rupees on behalf of the PMC, rainwater is accumulating on roads, converting them into ponds. Commuters are forced to wade through knee-deep water on pothole-ridden roads, jeopardising their safety.

“There is no other tragedy like this if the Sanjay Park area is not developed even after being included under the PMC,” said Sachin Bhosale, a social activist.

Although a road has been connected at the Vimannagar-Lohegaon area, but due to the narrow road in this area, motorists frequently encounter traffic bottlenecks. The citizens of the area are suffering due to the inability of the administration to plan a solution for this.

Since the area has been included under PMC, during the assembly and municipal elections, many political party candidates interact with the voters of the locality by giving empty promises of development works. But after getting elected, no one visits the area.
